Mementomori ry

Frequently asked questions

What is Mementomori ry?

A registered non-profit association (business ID 3637371-4, domiciled in Jyväskylä, registered 6 July 2026) that runs and funds the mementomori.social social media service. The association keeps the service independent and member-supported.

Why join Mementomori ry?

Membership fees keep mementomori.social running: the servers, maintenance and development. The funding comes from members, not from ads or investors, so the service depends on no outside party. As a full member you get a vote at the association meeting, a real say in how the service is run.

Members also get a private Matrix chat room and a visual badge on Mastodon. As a member you know you are supporting a good cause: we are an ethical, non-profit registered association. Using the social media service stays free for everyone, members and non-members alike.

How can I pay the membership fee?

You can pay by card or with the most common payment methods: Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, MobilePay, Link, Revolut Pay, Samsung Pay, Kakao Pay, Naver Pay, PAYCO, MB WAY, Satispay, Bancontact, BLIK, EPS, Pay by Bank and Pix.

The payment renews automatically. You can also pay by bank transfer with your personal reference number. You can also pay the annual fee in monthly instalments. The price is the same, it is just split into twelve payments.

Payments are handled by the secure Stripe, so your payment details are never processed or stored on this site. Payment instructions appear on your member page once your application is approved.

Do I have to pay the membership fee right when joining?

No. You can send the application through this site either by using your existing mementomori.social account or by sending us the form. You can pay as soon as you can sign in, but the board still approves your application separately. Your member portal shows the state of your membership and payments in real time.

We would still hope you pay your membership fee as soon as possible after joining. The fees cover the server costs, and the association runs entirely on them.

If an application is not approved for some reason, any fee already paid is refunded in full.

Do I have to give my real name in the membership application?

Yes. The Finnish Associations Act (section 11) requires that the registered member is a real person and that the official legal first name, last name and home municipality are provided.

The name is visible to the board only. To other members you can appear under a display name of your choice, and appearing on any member list is always your own choice: without your separate consent you are not shown on any list.
